Objective

Identify competences to reduce the structural factors that hinder 16-25 years old youth living in Catalonia’s possibilities to access the labor market.

This objective has been achieved through 22 semi-structured interviews, as the aim was to obtain key-informants’ in-depth understanding about:

  • Structural barriers to access the labor market faced by 16-25 years old living in Catalonia.
  • Competences to be developed in order to contribute to reduce them.
Results
Structural barriers to access the labor market faced by 16-25 years old living in Catalonia.
  • Capitalist economic model and economic crisis.
  • Socioeconomic policies.
  • Social stereotypes and discrimination.
  • Social inequality
  • Educational system and inappropriate career development practices.
Competences to be developed in order to contribute to reduce the structural barriers stated above.
  • Communicative competences: Hability to speak in public; capacity for dialogue; active listening; good reading and writing.
  • Methodological competences: Hability to use technologies of information and communication, as well as social networks; capacity to identify and use resources to report potential unjust situations; problema solving; organisational competences (capacity for horizontal, non-hierarchical management).
  • Personal competences: Resilience; emotional management; entrepreneurship (understood as the capacity of being proactive and challenging in order to carry-out new projects of diverse nature).
  • Competences to live together: Critical analysis; collaboration and team work; empathy; understanding and respecting diversity.

Besides the competences above, the following attitudes were pointed out: Willingness to improve, eagerness, enthusiasm, boldness, strong will and rebellion or non-conformism.
